Clarence, Missouri

Cumberland Morgan Shackelford (information obtained from his death certificate) died on July 11, 1914 in Clarence, Missouri (Shelby County, KY). His birth date is listed as March 29, 1829, and his place of birth is listed as Virginia. His parent's names are recorded as Morgan Shackelford and Jane Monroe Shackelford. His occupation is listed as "retired druggist."

His obituary appeared in the July 15, 1914 issue of the Clarence Courier newspaper (page one, column two), and reads as follows:

The Passing of C. M. Shackelford.

At 1:30 o'clock on Saturday July 11, 1914 occurred the passing of one of our oldest and most highly respected citizens, C. M. Shackelford. He was known and loved by our people both young and old for he had an interest in the welfare of the entire community. He was gentle, kind, and tender in his treatment to all around him always thinking of others rather than himself.

C. M. Shackelford was born March 28, 1829 in Culpeper County, Virginia on the south fork of the Rapahannock River. He came to Missouri [in] 1842. In 1849 he located in Shelbyville and the next year he was married in Shelbyville to Miss Catherine Marmaduke. In 1876 he and his family moved to Clarence where they have resided since.

In 1850 he was made a Mason in St. Andrews lodge at Shelbyville. He was the oldest Mason in the county and so far as is known the oldest in the state.

The order at this place have to say of him the following:

"Brother C. M. Shackelford fell asleep Saturday July 11, 1914 and is gone from his earthly labors to his eternal reward. He was made a Mason in 1850 in St. Andrews lodge, Shelbyville, Mo. and for more than sixty years splendidly exemplified the principles and teachings of the order he loved so well. He was a good loyal citizen and in his business affairs he was correct and honest in all his dealings. He was a consistent Christian and was faithful in hisattendance at religious services, and in his zeal for the interest of his church as well as his lodge; and in his home life, which was ideal, he was a kind and affectionate husband, father, and wise counsellor."

He joined the church early in life and has held every office within its bound - teacher, choir leader, Superintendent, steward and at the time of his death was a trustee. He did all he could for its good and welfare.

He is survived by his widow, four daughters and two sons, of whom two daughters and one son are present[:] Miss Lucy Shackelford, Mrs Eva Seward, V. Garland, the others are Mrs Eugenia Rader of Portland, Oregon, and Mrs Russell Baker of Los Angeles, Cal., and V. M. Shackelford of Kansas City, Mo.

The funeral took place Monday at 11 a. m. at Center Street Church conducted by the pastor Rev. V. O. White and the body was interred at Maplewood cemetery.

Feb 2, 1999

The following obituary appeared in the January 14, 1920 issue of the Clarence (Missouri) Courier, page 1, column 3:

Mrs. Catherine A. Shackelford

This good woman passed from her earthly home in Clarence, to her Heavenly home, in the evening of Sunday, January 11, 1920. She had been a shut-in for the past five years, and confined to a bed of suffering since the middle part of the past summer. During all her physical infirmity she showed a wonderful clearness of intellect and vividness of spiritual perception. Her power to endure the attacks of old age and disease was remarkable. She was 87 last October.

At Shelbyville, Mo., Dec. 20, 1849 Catherine A. Marmaduke was married to Cumberland Morgan Shackelford, the latter having died about five years ago. They came to Clarence forty-seven years ago. Here they reared a large family, six of whom are living.

Mrs. Shackelford was among the oldest consecutive residents of Clarence, and was always respected as a cultured Christian lady, ever exerting an influence for good, in her home and out of it.

She was a life-long Methodist, having joined the church in girlhood. No member of the church was more loyal to its institutions and ministers. It was a means of grace to any pastor to visit her. She welcomed the reading of God's word and prayer in her home. She knew the Lord, with whom she now is alive forever more.

Three grown daughters and an infant preceded the mother to the better land. Those who remain are Mrs. Eugenia Rader, of Portland, Oregon; Miss Lucie Shackelford, of Clarence; V. M. and V. S. Shackelford and Mrs. Eva Seward, of Kansas City, Mo., and Mrs Russell Baker, of Los Angeles, California.

Three of the daughters were with their mother during the last several months of her illness. Their faithful and tender ministries were received by her with the most loving appreciation.

May this circle, father, mother, children, be unbroken in the "House of Many Mansions."

HER PASTOR.

Osceola, Missouri                           Mar 7, 1999

The following obituary for William F. (Frank or Franklin) Shackelford appeared in the Oct. 21, 1909 issue of the Osceola, Missouri St. Clair Co. Democrat, page 3, col. 5.

Rev. W. F. Shackelford

In memory of Elder W. F. Shackelford, who departed this life at his home in Osceola, Missouri on October 17, 1909. W. F. Shackelford was born in Culpeper County, Va., August 10, 1835, was at the age of seventy-four years, two months, and seven days when he died. Was married to Miss Ruth Galloway October 24, 1854. To this union were born nine children, six of whom are living. In 1870 his companion departed this life. In July 1873 he was again married to Miss Nancy Wilhoit. Unto them were born six children, four of whom, with his wife, survive him. At the age of twenty years he professed faith in Christ uniting with the Missionary Baptist Church and continued a faithful and devoted member through life. He was ordained to the gospel ministry in 1877 devoting his time to the ministry with the exception of the last ten years, eight years of which he filled the office of Probate Judge of this county.

In 1884 he assisted in the organization of the St. Clair County Baptist Association, serving as clerk eighteen years in succession with the exception of one year when he was chosen moderator. In 1901 he was chosen as moderator.

The dear old father in Israel rests from his labors but his works shall follow him and he still lives in the memory and hearts of the people with and for whom his life has been spent.

In the family he will be missed as a kind and loving father and a devoted husband. In the church as a wise counsellor and interested member he will also be missed. The community has lost a good citizen and the world a Man.

The funeral service was conducted by Elder W. S. Birdsong at the Baptist church in Osceola amid a large crowd of sorrowing friends including several ministers.

The funeral arrangements were in charge of the Masonic order, of which he had long been a member.

The surviving children by his first wife are --

Mrs. Sallie Estes, Chetopa, Kas.

Mrs. Adda Waugh, Miami, Kas.

Mrs. Mary Tucker, Kansas City, Mo.

Mrs. Margie Baker, Kanawha, Iowa

Nicholas Co., WV.

Caleb Shackelford died on October 17, 1892 in Nicholas County, WV. The October 22 1892 issue of the Nicholas Chronicle contains the following announcement of his death:

Reverend Shackelford, who lived with his son F. G. Shackelford near Pool, this county, died on Monday of this week, aged 90 years. He was perhaps the oldest man in the county. He was a Baptist preacher in his day of influence, being a man noted for his upright walk in life. In years long gone by he was a familiar figure in public gatherings, having lived in this county more than 30 years. His long service to his master has now received its reward and he has gone up higher.

------

A handwritten copy of the following obituary for Caleb Shackelford was composed by his grandson, William Caleb Shackelford, but it is unknown if it was also published, and if so, where.

Died October 17th, 1892, at his residence in Nicholas county, Rev. C. Shackelford, in the 90th year of his age. He passed peacefully away after many weeks suffering. His funeral was preached the 18th by Rev. John Bragg, after which his remains were laid in the Mt. Pleasant Cemetery in the presence of about 300 people. May God who removed the husband and father comfort the widow and children.

-- His Nurse.

The following obituary, for Fountain Gordon Shackelford, appeared in the Nicholas Chronicle (Nicholas County, West Virginia) shortly after his death on January 11, 1907.

#2

Fountain G. Shackelford

Was born in Culpepper County, Va., December 12, 1834, died January 11, 1907. He came with his father, Rev. Caleb Shackelford, a Baptist minister, to Nicholas county W. Va., in the autumn of `59 and made that his home for life. He enlisted as a private soldier on the side [of] the South in the civil war and served its cause with honor to himself, being twice wounded, carried lead of the enemy to his grave. He was converted and united with the Baptist church after coming to thi[s] State, and seemed to be well a wisher of all denominations, believing that christianity consisted in more than name and formality. He was a Bible student, and believed and advocated what it taught him.

In religion and politics he entertained pronounced views which he loved to defend, yet could hear and treat with courtesy and kindness all who saw proper to differ with him. After the cooling down of the nation, he wrote a series of reminiscenses of the civil war that were published in the Nicholas Chronicle which were read and enjoyed by many on both sides in the contest.

After the war had ended, and Brother Shackelford had recuperated his health and replenished his purse, he returned to Virginia and united in marriage to Miss Georgiana McDonald, daughter of Silas McDonald. To them were born 7 children, 6 sons and one daughter who are all still living and sharing with their mother the loss of husband and father.

While death in any form or at any time brings sorrow and sadness, the above was peculiarly sad. Brother Shackelford was enjoying usual health and seemed as hopeful and cheerful as ever up to bed time the night of his death; after retiring to bed he rose took a drink of water and again retired, but soon became very ill and before 12 o'clock ended his earthly career, newralgia of the heart was thought to be the cause. No greater shock has struck this vicinity for many years. He will be greatly missed.

His funeral was preached by this writer the second Sunday in January at Mt. Gilead church to a large congregation of relatives and friends, after which six confederate veterans conveyed their deceased brother to the near by cemetery to await the day when "the earth shall yeild her dead, no more her slain conceal."
