While James or James, Jr. have been suggested, I'm still trying to discover the identify of my John SHACKELFORD. He was living in Culpeper Co., VA in 1763 at the time of his son Mordecai's birth. After moving to Pittsylvania Co. c1777, he left there c1783 & wound up in Shelby Co., KY where he died in 1819.

 Jan 10, 1999

Can't find my copy of John's will which Sharen Chambers  so kindly snail-mailed me in early '97.

Know it's in a stack of papers somewhere! I've run searches through my database & have come up with only this:

Will dated 10 June 1819, Book 5, pp. 434-435. Filled in 1822.  That's why the c1822 date.

Mary Jane Kaiser, editor of the "Shackelford Newsletter," which preceded the "Shackelford Quarterly," printed John's will at one time. Although I never subscribed to the "Newsletter," I know that Mary Jane was living in Fort Wayne, IN while editing it. Perhaps Laura Tully, editor of the "Quarterly," has the pertinent copy.

This mail that J.D. sent to Donnie and I April 17, 1999 in response to some of our questions to her I feel may be of benefit to all who read it.

Dear Patricia & Donnie -

Since both of you are asking about Shackelford's way back, I'm emailing to you two at the same time. Think that I'll also send a copy to my sister, Meredith.

Everything that I have is at least second hand so I can't begin to claim proficiency in early Shackelford history. The farthest back - and most complete - history came to me from MARVELOUS Mary Alley <majie@sava.gulfnet.com>. See her info at the end of this epistle.

Date: Mon, 12 Apr 1999 From: "P.G. Viellenave" <wvgal@brantleytel.net>

On another note, you sent me the following and I would like to know if you have a copy of this will, if not where I could find a copy.

Lancelot Shackelford. His will, dated 26 May 1647, Wouldn't it be just great having ALL the wills from this family!?!

Since Lancelot was the father of John (a butcher in Alresford - pronounced "Alford" - Hampshire, England) as well as the grandfather of Roger (baptized 23 Apr 1629, in Hampshire, New Alresford Parish, England), I'm assuming that Lancelot was of the same place.

Wills (perhaps only for the Church of England, but maybe for everyone) were kept in the ecclesiastical courts of probate. The two main courts being in York (for northern England - mainly N. of the Humber River) and Canterbury (for southern England & Wales).

HAMPSHIRE is definitely in the southern part. So there might be a copy in the Prerogative Court of the archbishop of Canterbury, a.k.a. PCC.

A copy (perhaps the original) would be expected to be in the court of the Archdeacon of the county - in the cathedral town. So in this case, I think, it would be in Winchester. Remember the popular song, "Winchester Cathedral" by Rudy Valle?)

Also, a copy could be at the County Record Office of Hampshire - in Winchester.

Just stopped to go Net searching! Found some good stuff: http://www.hants.gov.uk/sadexn/c86.html

For those unable to make a personal visit to Winchester, staff at Hampshire Record Office are able to provide a research service.

Research will be carried out using documents held by the Record Office, including parish registers, wills, census returns, electoral registers, directories, papers of landed families, the International Genealogical Index and school records.

How to use the research service:

Requests MUST be made on the official application form. To request an application form please write to us or send us a note via e-mail ( to sadeax@hants.gov.uk ).Please include details of your full postal address.

The request should be clear and precise, including all relevant information already known. Vague requests and lengthy descriptions should be avoided whenever possible.

Search fees: The charge for this service is 15 Pounds Sterling per hour. The minimum charge is 15 Pounds Sterling, payable in advance.

Normally record office staff will not carry out searches of more than three hours at one time in order to maintain a reasonable turnover of searches. You may prefer to place a lower limit on the amount of time staff spend on your research. As it is the research time you are paying for, not the result, please remember that you may have to pay for a negative outcome. All cheques and sterling money orders should be made payable to Hampshire County Council.

Re: Probate   http://www.pro.gov.uk/leaflets/ri2241.htm

The searcher for a pre-1858 probated will or grant of administration has two initial problems, namely to decide in which court the grant was made, and to ascertain where the records of that court are now kept. The estate of a person of small means was usually dealt with in the lowest permissible court, that of the archdeacon. The will of a person with goods in more than one archdeaconry was proved in the diocesan court. There were also various 'peculiar' jurisdictions, such as those exercised by the deans and chapters of cathedrals. Those leaving goods in more than one diocese or peculiar to the value of £5 (£10 in London) or more were deemed to be in possession of bona notabilia and, as such, their estates came under the cognizance of one or other of the provincial courts, the Prerogative Court of Canterbury (PCC) or the Prerogative Court of York. If goods were held in both provinces the grant could be made either solely in the court of the Archbishop of Canterbury, or in both provincial courts. The records of the minor probate courts are deposited in county record offices or other local repositories. The location of the records is explained Probate Jurisdiction: Wills and Where to Find Them by J Gibson (FFHS, 4th edition1994). The problem of deciding on the right court is more complex, and it may be necessary to search the records of several. http://www.pro.gov.uk/readers/frcleaflets/willsbefore.htm

About locating the microfilm for pre-1700 Wills at the PCC.

Anybody for a trip to England? Perhaps there's an easy way to order hard copies of Wills on the Internet or by FAX. Two or three years ago, I went through a horrendous time trying to send an International Money Order for pounds, in sterling, to the Oxfordshire Record Office. This is the drill: Jerry bought a 12-pound Sterling International Money Order from the U.S. Postal Service. However, it first had to be mailed to St. LOUIS, MISSOURI for the U.S. Postal Service there to process it & mail it on to England! The U.S.

Postal Service supposedly sends it within a "4 to 6 weeks" time span. Isn't that utterly absurd? In addition, this service cost $7.50. To make matters worse, the Oxfordshire Record Office NEVER got it even though I mailed it two different times ($7.50 + postage both times). The problems definitely occurred on this side on "the pond."

In '94, the Record Offices in Norfolkshire & Buckinghamshire, however, mailed me bunches of FREE stuff. Now County Record Offices, etc. might honor credit cards.

Re: Winchester

HAMPSHIRE - Winchester, the assize & county town 72 miles from London - 12 from Southampton - 52 from Oxford. Became the capital of Wessex in 519 and saw Egbert (one of Jerry's ancestors!) crowned as the first king of ALL England in 827. It was also the capital of Alfred the Great & many of his successors.

Winchester Cathedral: a painted & guilded mortuary chest contains the bones of Egbert - we saw it on our 1st trip to England in '66. Also went to see the so-called "Round Table of King Arthur" in the Great Hall of the castle begun by William the conqueror.

We stayed next-door to the Cathedral (our windows overlooked it) at The Wessex (T.H.F.), now Forte Crest. After too-long-of-a-drive from Land's End, we arrived at the hotel about midnight. I will never forget the SPECTACULAR view that greeted us when we entered our room - the illuminated cathedral in the stillness of the night.

Wish that we could be there now! - but June would be better.

I AM HAVING A HUGE PROBLEM!!! As for the parents of our ancestor John Shackelford, what proof do we have as to his parents?

NONE!!! About a decade ago, I first heard - from a snail-correspondant, Martha (Floyd) Miller - about James (Jr.) being the father of "our" John. Then Mary Alley emailed me her material with the same information about James (Jr.). Both Martha & Mary received their info from Howard P. Martin of Ripley, Mississippi.

I'm guessing that his original interest in the SHACKELFORDs came from being a descendant of the same MARTINs as the wife of Jeremiah WHITE (Mary MARTIN, d/o of John MARTIN who represented Caroline & King William counties in the Virginia General Assembly - he died during the 1756 session).

I saw a place in the new LDS site that claims his father is John Shackelford, SR, plus I just got an email that says John, son of James, JR is NOT the John who married Anne White. I do know there was a John Shackelford Sr and John Shackelford, Jr who bought land from Zaddock Bonner, who happens to be my great grandmothers, great grandfather.

Don't let the LDS Ancestral Files throw you - "the information has NOT been verified against any OFFICIAL RECORDS." Just cut & pasted this from their site:

"About Ancestral File:

Ancestral File is a collection of genealogical information taken from Pedigree Charts and Family Group Records submitted to the Family History Department since 1978. The information has not been verified against any official records. Since the information in Ancestral File is contributed, it is the responsibility of those who use the file to verify its accuracy."

Re: British Isles IGI Record

Don't know if the IGI Records are "verified against any official  records," but look at the different counties listed for Roger - Hampshire, Wiltshire, & Essex! Doesn't appear that the IGI Records are much better than their Ancestral Files.

1. Roger SHACKELFORD - International Genealogical Index/British Isles Gender: M Christening: 23 Apr 1629 Old Alresford, Hampshire, England

2. Roger SHACKELFORD - International Genealogical Index/British Isles Gender: M Birth: 23 Apr 1629 Wiltshire, England

7. Roger SHACKLEFORD - International Genealogical Index/British Isles Gender: M 26 Mar 1647 New Alresford, Of, Hampshire, England

According to Rand-McNally's "Road Atlas of Britain," there are 3 towns by the name of Alresford - Old Alresford & New Alresford in HAMPSHIRE - on either side of B3046, just about 6 miles NE of Winchester - and just plain Alresford in Suffolk. By the way, Wiltshire is NW of Hampshire & Essex is NE of London."

Just for kicks, the town of SHACKLEFORD is just south of Guildford, Surrey (which is 33 miles SW of London).

"Hampshire was called Southampton until 1959 when the name was officially changed." (Funk & Wagnalls New Encyclopedia)

Re: Mary ALLEY's material Very Early History:

The American branch of the Shackelfords is generally believed to have descended from Baron Jacques-le-Forte, who was a nobleman in Normandy and an officer in the army of William the Conqueror, when he overran England in 1066. William the Conqueror granted him land, and this land became the ancestral seat of the family in Godalming Parish, Surry County, England (about 39 miles northwest of London). The town was called Shackelford Village, but in 1620 it passed from the Shackelfords to the Earl of Middleton. (The name appears in old records with the spelling "Shackleford" as well as "Shackelford.")

Henry de Shackelford was a Gentleman in Waiting for Henry V circa 1390.

William de Shackelford was a descendant of Henry. He joined the Huguenots in 1550 and moved to France, where he was in the army of Navarre (1553-1610). He later left France and settled in the Netherlands, where he and his wife (name not known) died. His son (name not known) returned to England, where he joined the army of Charles I (1600-1649).

John Shackelford, a butcher in Alresford (pronounced "Alford"), Hampshire, England, was a descendant of William. His father's name is believed to have been Lancelot Shackelford. His will, dated 26 May 1647, left the bulk of his estate to his children: John (baptized 23 Dec 1627), Roger (bap. 23 Apr 1629), Charles (bap. 25 Jan 1630), Christopher (bap. 10 Mar 1632), Anne (bap. 16 Mar 1634), Ingram (bap. 12 Oct 1636), and Sarah.

A cousin named John Shackelford (who is thought to have been the son of Symon Shackelford and Ann Turner--married 24 Sep 1592) and John's children are mentioned in his will as receiving bequests.

1st Generation:

Roger Shackelford was baptized 23 Apr 1629, in Hampshire, New Alresford Parish, England, and died either 31 Jan 1682, in Gloucester Co., VA, or some time after 1704 in VA. In 1660 he married Mary Palmer in (probably Gloucester Co.) VA. She was the daughter of Edward Palmer, Sr. and the granddaughter of William of Warwick. They came to America sometime prior to 1658--probably 1652. In 1658 her brother, Edward Palmer Jr., received a 400 acre land grant in VA for transporting the following colonists to America: Roger Shackelford, Thomas Hall, Thomas Kibble, Guy Knight, and his siblings Mary, Annie, Richard, and Jane Palmer.

In 1678, Roger Shackelford received a 313 acre land grant in Gloucester County, VA, adjacent to Edward's, and adjoining land he already owned.

He was a member of the vestry of Petsworth Parish. On 14 Oct 1680, he was appointed Church Warden and served in that capacity for three years. Roger and Mary lived most of their lives in King and Queen County, VA, on a plantation they owned there.

Their nine children were:

1. James

2. Francis, who was born at Gloucester County, VA, in 1680 and died at Carteret County, NC, in 1722. Francis married Sarah Lewis in VA ca1700, and they had at least one son, John, who had a son named Stephen. Stephen married Anna Ballard in 1730 in NC;

3. John, who married Ann Livingston--daughter of John Livingston of SC;

4. Zachariah

5. Benjamin

6. Charles

7. Roger Jr.

8. William

9. Lucy Ann

2nd Generation:

James Shackelford (1660-1734) on 14 Jul 1687 in Abbington [Abingdon] Parish, Gloucester County, VA, married Elizabeth Robins--the daughter of Christopher Robins and the granddaughter of John Robins of Robins' Neck, Gloucester County, VA.

Their 10 children were James, James [sic], Mary, John, Charles, Roger, Robert, Richard, Jane, and Diana.

John Robins had come to VA in 1622 with his father, John, on the ship Margaret and John from England. The father returned to England shortly thereafter and died on the trip. The younger John Robins acquired vast holdings of land, 2000 acres of it for having transported 40 people to VA from England. The old "Point Lookout" house in Robins' Neck, reputedly the oldest house in Gloucester, is believed to have been built by him in the 1650s.

John's children were Christopher, William (who died without issue), and Thomas, as well as two daughters--names not known. He died (probably in 1656) leaving a large estate to his sons Christopher and William. (The daughters would have only inherited if all three sons had died without issue.) His eldest son, Christopher, inherited his plantation in Elizabeth City County and his plantation in Gloucester County.

Elizabeth's sister, Ann, married Robert Freeman. Both women had inherited their father's portion, but their husbands sold all but 60 acres of it. After their husbands' deaths they fell on hard times, and since their husbands had no right to sell, they sued to try to regain the land. In 1734 the rest of the estate was docked, as well as one-half of Robins' Neck, and was vested in Henry Willis.

He, in turn, conveyed to them 2000 acres and a water grist mill in Spotsylvania County, VA, and eight slaves. When the two families relocated to Spotsylvania County in 1735, there were over 60 children and grandchildren of James Shackelford and Robert Freeman who made the move.

That same year the new county of Orange was formed from Spotsylvania, and some of their land was in Orange County.

My information on the early Shackelfords was provided, in large part, by Howard P. Martin, 1515 City Ave. N, Box 134, Ripley, MS 38663. He has compiled a 614-page looseleaf book on the Shackelfords.

I think there are only two copies in existence: his and one at his local library. Information in his book was gleaned from his own research conducted at the LDS library and other locations; research by professional genealogist T.K. Jones; the book, "Huguenot Society," Vol. 13-16 1945-53; and "The Shackelford Magazine." (The Shackelford Magazine predated the Quarterly.) My other information on these early Shackelfords came from The Shackelford Quarterly. Mary Alley  majie@sava.gulfnet.com

There just might be a connection between Donna's Starling Madison Shackelford & "my" John Shackelford. John, of VA, is thought to have lived for a brief period in GA before going to KY. In 1784, John's son, Mordecai, moved to Elbert Co., GA for a short time (stated in his Pension Petition).

1. John Shackelford m. - probably Ann White (b. 1746), d/o Jeremiah & Mary (Martin) White. "Shackelford Clan Mag.," Feb. 1946, Vol. 1, No. 10:    John Jones, who married Ann or Annie Shackelford, is said to have been born in Orange Co., VA about 1740. He is said to have married in Albemarle Co., VA about 1760/70, but later to have moved to Chowan Co., NC and still later to Elbert Co., GA where he died about 1797. Their children:

Could it be that the Shackelfords & Jones were part of the group which traveled with Gen. Matthews? The following was taken from "The Official History of Elbert Co. (GA), 1790-1935" by John H. McIntosh, Cherokee Publishing Co., Atlanta, GA, 1983, Chapter IV, p. 33:

"In the year 1784, General George Matthews, who later became Governor, brought a large number of Virginians and North Carolinians to the Broad and Savannah River country and they established themselves in the territory around the site of what was soon to become the thriving and commercially important town of Petersburg."

Can hardly wait to see how this info checks out with everyone else's. This certainly is a MARVELOUS way to unravel our quandaries! Regards -   Wise men still seek Him.

Re: Your Civil War page

Although this particular Mordecai is NOT my ancestor, I thought that you might like to have this from "The Shackelford Quarterly" for July '94, P. 155:

"Roster of Confederate Soldiers of GA," Vol. 3, Henderson, L., 1960: Muster Roll of Co., GA, 34th Regiment, GA Volunteer Infantry, Army of Tenn. CSA, Franklin Co., GA (also known as Co. C):

This was all copied several years ago, but I think that the following was also on P. 155. Mordecai, the Confederate soldier, appears to have been the son of Robert & Elizabeth Shackelford and to have married Mary C. Morrison 29 Jan. 1856 in GA.

Could it be that the SHACKELFORDs & JONESes were part of the group which traveled with Gen.

Good morning, Tee & other cousins -   Tee wrote:

Is the Mordecai Shackelford, b 1763 in Culpepper Co, VA, son of John Shackelford and Anne, the same one tha married Sarah (Polly) Jones?

YES - but Ann, not Anne, for wife of John.

If yes, have you gotten the source information from the LDS Family History Library for his IGI (International Genealogical Index) entry?

NO.

I also noted that BritTech's Mordecai ended up in KY

NOT so - please see below! His father, John, wound up in Kentucky. BTW, there was not a son by the name of Edmund for either "my" John or Mordecai.

Since there were multiples with the same names, it's no wonder that the SHACKELFORDs are hard to decipher! For instance, there were two John SHACKELFORDs in Shelby Co., KY where "my" John spent the last part of his life. CENSUS of 1810: Page 205: John Shackelford 01101-00001-09   Page 217   John Shackelford 00101-00301-08

Just recently, I received the MOST APPRECIATED copies of the wills of "my" John & Mordecai from a member of our group, Sharen Chambers. (She found them in issues of the "Shackelford Newsletter" which was edited by Mary Jane Kaiser.) Because of Sharen's great kindness, I now have the assurance that the first name of John's wife definitely was Ann. Also, I now have a correct record of John's children. Someone, along the way, must have added an extra comma & come up with an additional child, by  the name of Gregory, instead of the married name for Nancy. How MARVELOUS to have that settled! It also looks like John lived about 3 years after signing his Will.

John SHACKELFORD   m. - believed to have married Ann WHITE (b. 1746), d/o Jeremiah & Mary (Martin) WHITE. (Jeremiah WHITE   d. 1777 - Albemarle Co., VA.) 1763 - Living in Culpeper Co. - the part that became Madison Co. - when son, Mordecai, was born (Pension Petition, S21971, of Mordecai). c1777 - Removed to Pittsylvania Co., VA

"Shackelford Clan Magazine," Vol. 11, No. 3:

". . . John S. seems to have left Pittsylvania as early as 1783, evidently THE OLD COLONIAL JOHN - official   Records of Pittsylvania Co., Order Book 4, p. 499. Probably same John who moved to Georgia and later to Shelby Co., Kentucky and died there in 1819. That one John lived in Pittsylvania Co. early is established by the statement of his son, Mordecai in his pension petition."

"Military Records of Pittsylvania Co. VA, 1767-1783" taken from Judgment Books 1, 2, and 4 and Deed Book 4, compiled by Elizabeth Tunstall White:  Judgments No. 4, At a court held Aug. 15, 1780 "John Shackleford came into court and made oath that he   served as a Corporal under Captain Francis KESTLEY (?) who was under the command of Col. Peter HOGG, on the Expedition against the Indians in the year 1755, until   he was disbanded and that he never Received a Warrant or Certified for such Military Service Which is Ordered to be Certified to the Register of the Land Office." (Page 336)

Following the Revolutionary War, c1784, he's thought to have traveled to GA with Gen. Matthew's group.   Will written June 10, 1819, Shelby Co., KY - Book 5, pp. 434-435. Filed 1822.   Children as they were named in his will:   Milly SHACKELFORD, Betsy BALLARD,  , Polly Ann HULETT,   Jeremiah SHACKLEFORD,   John SHACKELFORD,   William SHACKELFORD,   Sterling SHACKELFORD, Nancy R. GREGORY,   Mordecai SHACKELFORD

Instead of property as the others received, Mordecai was to have $550 raised out of the sale of property. That does seem to indicate that Mordecai was not living in Kentucky.

Re: Mordecai

All except his marriage & death data was gleaned from Mordecai's Pension Claim # S 21971:

b. 1763 - Culpeper Co., VA (became Madison Co.)   c1777 - Moved with his family to Pittsylvania Co., VA.   m. 12 Oct. 1788, Albemarle Co., VA - Sarah ("Polly") JONES, with bond by John Jones (Vogt & Kethley).   (John JONES d. c1797 in Elbert Co., GA) 1784 - moved near Ruckersville in Elbert Co., GA 1799 - moved across the Savannah River to Abbeville Dist., SC (both locations in Pension Petition)   1 March 1781 - Entered the Service at Pittsylvania   Courthouse, VA for a three months tour.

15 March 1781 - With Gen. Green at the Battle of Guilford Courthouse. About the 1st of August 1781, he again entered the service under as a substitute in the place of his father, John Shackelford. In 1784 - Moved near Ruckersville in Elbert Co., Georgia.

In 1799 - Removed to Abbeville Dist, S.C. 69 years of age when he filed claim on 18 Sept. 1832 in   Elbert Co., Georgia, but living on the South Carolina side made application in Elbert because "much near." Resident of Abbeville Dist., S.C.

Witnesses: Clergyman in Abbeville Dist., S.C. - Charles Martin, STEPHEN JONES [probably brother-in-law], and Jacob Martin, Charles W. Martin. d. 1839 - Abbeville Dist., SC

Mordecai's will, recorded in Book 3, P. 7, Abbeville Dist., SC,

was "Signed Sealed and Delivered" on 16 Sept. 1839. His children

were named as follows: John W. SHACKELFORD,   Allen ", Robert ", Wiley ", Thomas ", Howard ", Stephen "

His grandson, John Howard GRANT, s/o Mary McCAESTER, was also named in Mordecai's will.

"Shackelford Clan Mag.," Nov. 1947, Vol. 3, No. 7:

Editor: T. K. Jones of Lubbock, Texas

MORDECAI SHACKELFORD and Polly's children:   John W. = Margaret B. White   Robert = Elizabeth McAllister,   Mary = _____ Grant,   Howard B. = _____ M. Carlyle,   Wylie = Mary ________,  ** STEPHEN JONES SHACKELFORD = MELISSA LEWIS,   William ?,   Hugh ?,   Fanny ?,   Mattie ?,   Allen = Elizabeth Maxwell,   Thomas J. = Martha _______

Where they moved:  Abbeville Dist., SC- - - Mordecai died there, 1840.

Tippah Co., Miss.- - - - John W. and Wylie.

Georgia- - - - - - - - - Robert (descendants in Franklin Co.)

Howard (descendants in Atlanta & Carrollton)

Allen and Thomas J. (descendants in Pike Co.)

(Allen & Thomas J. married in Elbert Co., GA. From "History of Elbert County," Martha's maiden name was WALL.) It's interesting that the children missing from Mordecai's Will, who were named in the "Shackelford Clan Magazine," are also the same ones that didn't have spouses listed. Wonder whether William, Hugh, Fanny, & Mattie died earlier or simply never existed!?!

Oh, there is nothing in what I have that states that Mordecai (s/o John) had a son by the name of Mordecai!  By the way, there's an additional SHACKLeFORD or SHACKELFORD family to pursue which is connected to this particular SHACKELFORD family!!! The mother of Mordecai's bride was Ann/Annie SHACKELFORD:

DAR's '94 Patriot Index:

John JONES, Sgt. in VA.:   b. c1743   d. post 1797 - GA --> m. Ann SHACKleFORD

"Shackelford Clan Mag.," Feb. 1946, Vol. 1, No. 10:

JOHN JONES, who married Ann or Annie SHACKELFORD, is said to have been born in Orange Co., VA about 1740. He is said to have married in Albemarle Co., VA about 1760/70, but later to have moved to Chowan Co., NC and still later to Elbert Co., GA where he died about 1797. Their children:

Stephen JONES = Miss Caldwell,   Allen JONES = Jemina Polhill, Wiley JONES = Miss West,   John JONES, Jr. = Miss Dickey,   Thomas JONES = Eliza Merriweather Darricott Patsy JONES = John S. Foster,   Eliza JONES = John Wingfield,  *** Sarah ("Polly") JONES = MORDECAI SHACKELFORD,   Betsy JONES = John White

My SHACKELFORD Ancestors:

John SHACKELFORD = Ann (WHITE)

Mordecai SHACKELFORD = Sarah "Polly" JONES

Stephen Jones SHACKELFORD = Melissa LEWIS

Henry Patrick SHACKELFORD = Jennie Spring EDWARDS

Florence Gertrude SHACKELFORD = Albert Howard SCHENCK

Hopefully, all of the above will help to clear up the muddle!
